Throughout July and August we will be looking at some of the ‘Heroes of the faith’ listed in Hebrews 11 under the theme of ‘ Faith Conquers’.
Right at the start of chapter 11 we are given a definition of faith:
“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
Faith is the certainty that God is all-powerful. Faith is trusting God to do what is best. Faith believes God is faithful all the time. Faith is not a leap, nor a strong emotion. It is action based on trust and belief in God alone.
This chapter is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith”. The writer introduces us to an impressive list of heroic figures from the Old Testament – remarkable men and women whose stories stand out to encourage and challenge the faith as we see how the faith they had in God ‘conquered’. Just as God worked through them by their faith, He still works through us “by faith” today!
The writer tells us how they “were made strong out of weakness” (v34) – It is God who makes us strong in our weakness. It is having God in our lives that makes the difference.
As we move through this series we will see from these great examples what faith is, how faith is lived, how faith changes everything, and we will learn where faith begins.
